Hayley Graham
Coach
Hayley is a dedicated junior coach at Northcote Swim Club, having joined the coaching team in 2024 after moving to Melbourne from North Queensland. A former Club Captain and Queensland State swimmer with the Cairns-based Marlin Coast Swim Club, Hayley brings a wealth of experience and passion for swimming to her new role.
Hayley began her swimming career at the age of eight with the Marlin Coast Swimming Club, where she quickly advanced in the sport, specializing in backstroke. She became a regular competitor at Queensland and inter-State championships, where her talent and dedication were evident. As Club Captain at Marlin Coast Swimming Club, Hayley played a key role in fostering a strong sense of community and team spirit—values she now fosters in her coaching.
Currently, Hayley is pursuing a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at LaTrobe University. Alongside her studies, she is committed to nurturing the next generation of swimmers, applying her experience and knowledge to help them develop both in and out of the pool
Passionate about fostering a positive and supportive environment, Hayley is excited to contribute to the Northcote Swim Club community.
Nicholas Malcom
Coach
Nicholas began his swimming career at the age of 10 with the Ivanhoe Neons. In his very first swim meet, he competed in the 200 Free, 100 Fly, and 100 Free, impressively placing in both the 100 Fly and 100 Free events. In 2017-18, he made the move to Northcote Swim Club, where he remained a dedicated member until his retirement in 2021. During his time with Northcote, Nicholas set club records in the 50m Freestyle (25.76 seconds) and 400m Freestyle (4:20.01) in Long Course, and 50m Freestyle (25.87 seconds), 400m Freestyle (4:28.87), and 400m Individual Medley (4:50.46) in Short Course. These achievements highlight his versatility and skill across both sprint and endurance events
Since retiring from competitive swimming, Nicholas has been coaching the senior swim team for the past three years, sharing his extensive experience and passion for the sport with the next generation of athletes.Outside of the pool, Nicholas is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Meteorology and Climate Science, at university. His academic journey allows him to delve into the complexities of weather patterns and atmospheric science.
Nicholas’s dedication to swimming and his academic pursuits reflect his commitment to excellence in all aspects of life. His journey from a young swimmer at Ivanhoe to a record-setting competitor at Northcote, and now as a coach, showcases his resilience and passion for the sport.
Ian James Barr
Senior Coach
Ian is a former national swimmer from Malaysia who specialized in backstroke and individual medley (IM) events. He competed at prestigious competitions such as the SEA Games, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. During his distinguished career, Ian represented the National Sports Council of Malaysia from November 2008 to August 2018, setting national records, winning two SEA Games medals, ranking 9th at the Asian Games, and reaching the semifinals at the Commonwealth Games.
After retiring in 2018, Ian transitioned into high-performance coaching. From January 2017 to December 2022, he served as the Director of Coaching at SwimKnights Aquatics in Kuala Lumpur, where he shaped the development of numerous swimmers. He is currently the Head Competitive Swimming Advisor at Vgo Global Sdn Bhd, working remotely to manage a team of three coaches and oversee pre-squad, pre-competitive, and competitive programs.
Ian’s dedication to the sport drives him to share his extensive knowledge and experience with the next generation of athletes, fostering resilience, courage, and strength of character. Now based in Melbourne, Ian is actively seeking opportunities to continue making a meaningful impact as a coach and mentor in the competitive swimming sector.
